Prayer beads, also known as malas, are very helpful in keeping count for your chanting practice. Traditional prayer beads have 108 beads on them. Malas are used in many religious and spiritual traditions, such as Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity, and the mystic traditions. Malas are typically made from rosewood, sandalwood, or rudraksha seeds, and come in many forms. A rosary can also be used, as it has a count of 108 beads, if one counts the "5 decades" of the rosary twice.
Malas, or prayer beads, can purchased online or in local spiritual stores for less than $10.
